This is the shortest and simplest route to Danum Valley for anyone already based in Sabah — whether you're combining it with Mount Kinabalu, the Kinabatangan River, or Sipadan.
Option 1: Fly (recommended)
Several flights run daily between Kota Kinabalu and Lahad Datu, taking under an hour. On a clear day the flight offers views of Mount Kinabalu. This is the option almost all lodges build their transfer schedules around.

Option 2: Overland by bus
Buses from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu take around 8 hours and cost a fraction of the flight. It's a legitimate option if you're not in a hurry and want to see more of Sabah's interior along the way, but it eats most of a travel day.
Option 3: Self-drive to Lahad Datu
Renting a car and driving yourself to Lahad Datu is possible (roughly 7 hours), though you'll still need the lodge's own 4WD transfer for the final leg into Danum Valley itself — you can't drive your rental car into the conservation area.
Flying is worth the cost for most travellers — it turns a full travel day into a half-day, leaving more time for the rainforest itself. The bus or self-drive options make sense mainly if you're already road-tripping through Sabah.
| Method | Duration | Notes |
