Sabah rewards sequencing: its highlights line up along a rough west-to-east arc, and getting the order right saves whole days.
7 days: the wildlife essentials
- Days 1–2: Arrive Kota Kinabalu, recover from flights, city and sunset
- Day 3: Fly to Sandakan — Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and sun bear centre
- Days 3–4: Kinabatangan River — two boat safaris minimum
- Days 5–7: Transfer to Lahad Datu, 3D2N Danum Valley, fly out
Tight but genuinely doable — you'll see rehabilitated and wild orangutans, river wildlife, and primary forest in one week.
10 days: the sweet spot
- Days 1–2: Kota Kinabalu
- Days 3–4: Kinabalu Park & Kundasang highlands (no summit climb) or start the 2D1N climb
- Day 5: Fly/drive east — Sepilok
- Days 5–6: Kinabatangan River
- Days 7–10: 4D3N Danum Valley, fly out via Lahad Datu
The extra Danum night is where the ten-day plan earns its keep — see why 4D3N beats 3D2N.

14 days: the full Sabah
- Days 1–2: Kota Kinabalu
- Days 3–4: Mount Kinabalu summit climb (2D1N)
- Day 5: Recovery day, Poring hot springs
- Day 6: Sepilok
- Days 7–8: Kinabatangan
- Days 9–12: 4D3N Danum Valley
- Days 13–14: Island finish — Semporna-area diving/snorkelling or KK islands, fly home
Sequencing principles
- Move west to east once — KK → Sandakan/Sepilok → Kinabatangan → Lahad Datu/Danum — and never backtrack
- Put Danum Valley late: it's the crescendo, and its disconnection is a better trip-ender than trip-opener
- Climb Kinabalu early while legs are fresh; jungle trekking after summit day is kinder than the reverse
- Book Danum and the mountain first — everything else flexes around those two
Danum Valley will likely be the single biggest line item — see the full cost breakdown to plan around it.
