Danum Valley Trails, Ranked

An extensive trail network surrounds both lodges, with routes for every fitness level — most hikes run one to three hours, longer if the wildlife cooperates. Here's what each one involves.

TYPICAL HIKE1–3 hours
ALL TREKSGuided only
FITNESS RANGEEasy to strenuous

Every trek in Danum Valley is guided — that's a permit condition, and honestly a benefit: the guides spot wildlife you'd walk straight past. Trails are chosen each day based on your group's fitness, interests, and recent animal activity.

Easy: nature trails and the canopy walkway

Both lodges run gentle orientation walks on well-maintained trails — some sections even have spaced wooden boardwalk planks. These are where guides introduce the forest's ecology and where much of the casual wildlife spotting happens. The canopy walkway adds treetop-level viewing with almost no exertion.

Easy–moderate: river tubing

One of the most fun activities on offer: after roughly an hour's hike upstream to the launch point, you float leisurely down the Danum River back toward the lodge in an inner tube — a completely different perspective on the forest, drifting past it at river level. Water levels determine availability, so it's confirmed day-by-day.

Moderate: the signature treks

The Coffin Cliff and Viewpoint trek is the classic — a steep climb to an ancient burial site and the valley's best panorama, with a Jacuzzi Pool swim on the descent. Fairy Falls is the other half-day favourite, best if you're staying three nights or more. At the Field Centre, the Tembaling Waterfall trek and a separate ancient burial site fill the same role.

Choosing your treks

On a 3D2N stay you'll realistically fit one signature trek plus the canopy walkway and a night activity. With 4D3N or more, you can do Coffin Cliff and Fairy Falls or tubing without rushing. Tell your guide your priorities on day one — they'll sequence the days around weather and wildlife activity.

Trail conditions

Expect mud after rain (which is often), roots and steep steps on the climbs, and leeches year-round — long trousers tucked into socks handles them. See the full packing list for footwear advice, including the "adidas kampung" rubber shoes local guides swear by.

Trails — common questions

Can I hike without a guide in Danum Valley?

No — all trekking inside the conservation area is guided, as a condition of the entry permit. It's also genuinely easy to get lost in unbroken primary forest.

Do I need to be very fit?

No — trails range from flat nature loops to steep climbs, and guides tailor routes to your group. If you can handle stairs in humid heat, you can do the signature treks.

Is river tubing always available?

It depends on river levels — too low or too high and it's off for the day. Your guide confirms each morning.
